Through the Lens, He Sees with His Heart

Darko Dozet is a photographer who passionately falls in love with people, landscapes, and events. He does not observe them through the camera with the calculated eye of a tradesman, but with his heart. That is why his photographs are not worth the standard thousand words—but many thousands more.

He remained devoted to the Novi Sad bureau of Novosti even while working for other employers. When he would send us his “spare” photographs, they were often better than someone else’s “main” work. Therefore, in September 2007, when the company director Manojlo Vukotić asked me what else I needed for our Novi Sad office, my only possible answer was: “Photo reporter Darko Dozet.”

Darko has now been a member of our Novi Sad bureau for a decade. Together, we have traveled thousands of kilometers and covered countless events. We have “furrowed” Vojvodina with pen and camera, reached Vukovar in Croatia at a time when Cyrillic was being banished, preserved from oblivion moments of our people in Hungary and Romania, and followed every step of the migrant crisis.

In each of these assignments, Darko was—as if driven by a magnetic force—guided by his own passion and the need to capture life from a different angle.

These photographs are, quite simply, the diary of his life.
