If life rewards—or punishes—you by leading you into journalism (and it seems it is both), all of it can feel futile if you are not given the chance to report on great events, and if you are not tested by them.
By chance, in 1998, I played a decisive role in bringing Darko Dozet into Tanjug in Novi Sad, where I was editor-in-chief. Not even a year later, NATO brutally bombed our country, and although still somewhat inexperienced, Darko proved—at that first major professional challenge—that he possessed all the qualities of a top-notch photo reporter.
He demonstrated a remarkable instinct for recognizing the exact moment that needed to be captured, an immediate reaction that made his camera an extension of his mind and soul, and—perhaps above all—courage. It is true that this courage sometimes had to be restrained, but it never failed him.
He has confirmed all of these qualities time and again in the years that followed. He continues to confirm them even today, as he marks this significant professional jubilee—an occasion for which he truly deserves warm congratulations.
